《論語》《述而》7.19 :

葉公問孔子於子路，子路不對。子曰：「女奚不曰，其為人也，發憤忘食，樂以忘憂，不知老之將至云爾。」

The Duke of She asked Zi Lu about Confucius, and Zi Lu did not answer him. The Master said, “Why did you not say to him, ‘He (referring to Confucius) is simply a man, who in his eager pursuit of knowledge forgets his food, who in the joy of its attainment forgets his sorrows, and who does not perceive that old age is coming on?’”

【Alternative translation】The Duke of She asked Tzu-lu about Confucius. Tzu-lu did not answer. The Master said, “Why didst thou not say, ‘He is a man that forgets to eat in his eagerness, whose sorrows are forgotten in gladness, who knows not that age draws near?’”

【現代漢語翻譯】葉公問子路：孔子是怎樣的人，子路不回答。孔子說：「你怎麽不說：他這個人啊，發憤學習就忘記吃飯，高興起來就忘記了憂愁，不知道快要變老了等等？」

【试译】叶公向子路打听孔子的为人，子路不答。孔子对子路说：“你怎么不说：‘这个人啊，用功忘了吃饭，快乐忘了忧愁，不晓得自己就要老了，如此而已。’”
