《論語》《堯曰》20.3 :

子曰：「不知命，無以為君子也。不知禮，無以立也。不知言，無以知人也。」

The Master said, “Without recognizing the ordinances of Heaven, it is impossible to be a superior man. Without an acquaintance with the rules of Propriety, it is impossible for the character to be established. Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know men.”

【Alternative translation】The Master said, “He that does not know the Bidding cannot be a gentleman. Not to know good form is to have no foothold. Not to know words is to know nothing of men.”

【現代漢語翻譯】孔子說：「不懂得客觀規律，就不能做君子；不懂得道德規範，就無法建功立業；不懂得分辨言論，就不能瞭解人。」

【原文】子曰：「不知命，无以为君子也；不知礼，无以立也；不知言，无以知人也。」

【白话解】孔子说：「不了解命运，就没有办法做一个君子，不懂得礼节，就无法处事待人，不能自立了；不知道从言语当中分辨是非，就无从认识一个人的善恶邪正了。」
